Default First Oil Change @ 5k or 10k?

2018 A6 2.0. The service department is telling me to wait until 10k for first oil change. This seems kind of bananas to me. Should I do 5k intervals or stick with 10k per dealer spec?

Lots of discussion about this on AW. Opinions all over the map. Do what you are comfortable with. I'm a 5K man but others will say that is unnecessary/waste of money based on having done repeated oil analysis. I've seen what a BMW M3 engine looks like w/5K oil changes and what one looks like w/10K -- not pretty FWIW.

Best,
Jeff

I have a 2016 A6 with 2.0T. The maintenance schedule calls for the first oil change at 5K miles and every 10K after that. Every 10K miles is fine. The most important thing is to break the car in as recommended in the owner's manual.

Another subject that you will get a lot of different opinions on. Factory is Castrol OE Professional 5-40, which is very good oil. I talked to some service people that have been to the factory (Audi) mechanic schools and they highly, highly recommended either Motul 5-40 or Liqui Molly 5-40. Mobil 1 is also good oil and is less expensive by quite a bit. I use the Liqui Molly 5-40, and do like it a lot. You will also find the folks that swear by Amsoil, which I think is probably good oil but just not on my list.

Smokes, it will be any oil that meets 502.00 or 504.00 spec. You need to double-check the label under the hood for the specific recommendation - - it should be just above the radiator.
