Default New S5, new to forums

Hi all.

Picked up a new 2019 S5 a few days ago after driving BMW's for the past 20 years or so. Love the car so far (minus the drivers assistant sensors). Prestige, S Sport, 19" wheels and a few others. I'll edit this and add a picture or two in a few days (been raining for a week), and after a few hundred (thousand?) miles perhaps some comments on driving/handling.

Welcome. I come from a long line of BMWs myself. Two 5 series, a Z4 and now on my second X5. Loving the S5 so far. I am looking forward to your comments on the S.

Tadix, Congrats, the S5 is a gem. Which BMW did you have prior to the S5? We had quite a few BMW in the pass as well, 535xi, 550xl, 328xi, X3 and X5.

welcome! May I ask what about the drivers assistance that you don’t like? I use mine to drive 25 highway miles everyday and I can’t imagine commuting without it. It did take some adjustment and some familularity on how it handles situations but I’ve been quite pleased.

First gripe would be the parking sensors, seems if you get within 3-4 feet the 'red' alarms are going off, entirely too sensitive.
Second, had a 'Pre-sense warning' slam on the brakes as I was making a left turn, no traffic close.
Third, blind spot starts going off too early, I tend to look for other cars as when it goes off it's visible.

I've had similar features on other cars, I know they can be better.

So I've got almost 8,000 miles on the S5 now, and while there is much to like about it, I'm convinced the car is not safe. I have Presense Warnings fairly regularly. I've had the car slam on the brakes 5 times (once while stopped, the other 4 moving from 30 to 55 mph.

I'm told you can turn it off, but have to do so every time you start the car. This does not work, I still get the warnings.

I'm told that the cameras in use can sometimes mistake leaves or shadows or etc. for obstructions, but not how this helps me solve the situation.

I've talked to several other drivers (through other forums) that have experienced this. some others seem to have it worse that I, some not as bad. Is it a bas sensor or is it a bad system?

So, ... tell me something that will make me reconsider getting rid of this one.
