Default Some repair pricing questions

I know these prices are of course higher than a non-Audi location (although on other repairs I've received pricing from local European car specialists that was just as high as Audi, and I still can't bring myself to take my 'baby' to a regular/local mechanic), so can you please tell me if these are ok prices (for a dealer) or are they completely ridiculous and, at a minimum, I should find another dealer (even if I can't bring myself to just go to a local place)? And no, I'm unfortunately not handy enough to do any of this myself.
  • New blower motor installed $639.27
  • Diagnose fault for foot well motor $159.53
  • Front brake pads and rotors $856.07
  • Rear brake pads and rotors $813.48
Thanks!

Yeah if the blower motor job includes the blower then it's on the high side. For the "foot well" motor maybe I'm getting dumber as I get older, but I've never run across any of those varmints. As to the brake job, that's double on the high side for an independent. You're talking about $500 Cdn for original quality parts Textar & Zimmermann.Full brake job is 2-4 Hrs, properly done. So take your local labour rate and figure it out.Audi brakes don't require "Gerhard" to do the job. They're very straightforward and easy to do.Only stipulation - the Indie has to have a VCDS scanner A) to retract rear electric parking brakes B) More importantly this demonstrates that he/she are "on the ball" when dealing with German cars.

Thanks so much. Concerning the brakes, just to make sure I'm following you correctly; pads and rotors for front and rear should be around $500 cdn which is about $375 USD. 4 hours (max) @ $150 usd/hour is another $600. So just about $1,000 total, whereas my deal wants almost $1,700...

Also, concerning the blower, while I have no doubt it's on the high side, is it ridiculous (like the brakes seem to be) or is it just a big high (i.e. $400 to $500 would be decent, they are charging $640, or should it really be closer to $300/$350 so they are really high?).

Thanks again!

John, you should factor in your local shop hourly rate vs. the dealer's hourly rate. Murray isn't gonna know that for your area. In my area, the dealer's rate vs. the local shops is pretty close. No major savings to be found there.

You need to ID a local, trusted shop that would like to work on your car. That's the only way you're going to make thi$$ work.

Thanks, but I think it's not necessarily an hourly rate issue, it's more of the dealer using higher hours, correct? In other words, it seems like most people agree that it takes 1-2 hours for brakes (in fact, I just got an estimate from a local mechanic who put 1 hour for the blower, 1 hour for front brakes and 1 for rear). They actually charge a higher rate than Audi, but are saying it's just an hour (whereas Audi seems to be including 2-3 hours instead of 1 hour)... Or something along those lines.

You're right, the dealers probably quote an outlandish hourly number for a straightforward job. I think that's pretty much standard practice across the country. Many members here are reporting their dealer needs $1000 per axle for brake work. Not unusual.

Do you have a trusted local VW/Audi shop?

Unfortunately have not yet found one that's very close to me. There appear to be some well-reviewed ones 30-45 minutes away. I'll probably have to give one of those a try.

Yeah, I'd agree. You also need to factor in your time, travel and not having a loaner car.

My local Audi dealer sometimes runs summer specials as business tends to be very slow. Keep an eye out for stuff like that.

Here's the basic parts from any online Audi dealership. (You can still find cheaper elsewhere, but these are direct from an Audi dealership parts prices available online.)
Blower Motor - 8K1820021C - $238
The expensive part is the regulator...if they have to replace that as well 8K0820521B it is $400

Footwell motor? I'm not sure what that is.

Front brakes I am not sure if you have the 320mm or 345mm front brakes.
320mm
Front Rotors - 8K0615301A 320mm $110/ea ($220/pair)
Front Pads - 8K0698151L $128
Front pad sensor - 4G0615121B $76 (For some reason this part is insanely priced on all Audi's considering it is just a piece of wire...you can find it aftermarket for like $12)
Front rotor screw - N10648301 $1 (You can reuse your old one if it comes out)
345mm
Front Rotors - 8K0615301M 345mm $136/ea ($272/pair)
Front Pads - 8R0698151S $140
Front pad sensor - (Same as above)
Front rotor screw - (Same as above)

Same for the rear is it 300mm or 330mm?
300mm
Rear Rotors - 8K0615601M 300mm $83/ea ($166/pair)
Rear Pads - 8K0698451A $94
Rear caliper mount bolt. (These are supposed to be replaced when removed.) N91041702 $3x4=$12
Rear rotor screw - (Same as above)
330mm
Rear Rotors - 4H0615601Q 330mm $92/ea ($184/pair)
Rear Pads - 8K0698451G $94
Rear caliper mount bolt. (These are supposed to be replaced when removed.) N91041702 $3x4=$12
Rear rotor screw - (Same as above)

So based on what you are saying should be a 4 hour $600 labor charge for the brakes +~$400 Front and ~$280 Rear = roughly $1280 compared to almost $1700
And the $1280 above is with the stupid $76 sensor...

Hope that helps.
