255/40/20 or 265/35/20 for 18' S6? Advice needed
Yes, I have used the forum's search function and did not find anything helpful for an S6 set up. Just FYI.
I drive the stock 2018 S6 255/35/20 rims/ tires (did swap out to all seasons though) and live in NJ where the roads are worse than a 3rd world country.
Was wondering if anyone went for a different tire size on the original rims? I'd like some more meat on the wheels as these roads are pretty rough on the car.
I don't commute with the car so I don't want to downsize to a 19" rim, but drive it enough to feel that I'm beating up the car with the 20" and only 35 AR sidewall.
Was thinking to either go 255/40/20 or 265/35/20? Will they fit the original rims? or do I have to get spacers/ different rims for 265s?
Which set up will be better for ride quality and protect the car? 265 mm width or higher aspect ratio?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

The stock wheel is 8.5" wide so the recommended max width tire is the 255.
A 265 should really go on a 9"-9.5" wide rim. I'm not saying it won't necessarily fit, just that it might be a bit bulging looking.
With the stock size you are looking at 89mm of sidewall.
With the 255/40/20 you get 102mm.
The problem with a 255/40/20 is the diameter will change more than 2%...3.8% to be exact which means you will be going faster than you speedometer actually says you are. Also I don't know the exact clearance to the suspension parts as the tire would be taller.
With the 265/35/20 you get 92mm of sidewall so really not much help there over stock, plus the aforementioned wheel width thing...
Unfortunately the best way to soften things up is what you already decided you don't want to do and that is 19" wheels. Then you would get 255/40/19 and 102mm of sidewall.
I know....it is a tough pill to swallow...I am in the same boat thinking about downsizing to 19" for better ride quality even though I like the way the 20" looks. The upside is usually 19" wheels and tires are a little cheaper.
