Default 2.7T MT shift linkage failure

What are the most likely failure points, how to access and diagnose?
Suddenly, will not shift into any gear, clutch or not, engine or not running.
Thanks for help.

My guess it's probably an internal transmission shifter problem, since it was sudden, but maybe not. I have only adjusted shifter from inside car, but you might get lucky and have an issue with the gear selector connection to the shift rod. Allen bolt loose or sheared. Can check from inside car, by prying shifter trim panel and pulling back. Boot comes with it. Then remove insulation cover to expose Allen bolts. One on left is shifter rod. One on right is pivot rod. If those bolts are OK, you can also tell if the rods are floppy and the connections to the transmission is bad.. If floppy, the Bentley manual says you can get to the external transmission connections without removing transmission, but directions are sketchy as usual. Disconnect driver side front axle, drop exhaust behind sliding sleeves, drop drive shaft, prop transmission and lower subframe a couple of inches to get at connections. The drawing of the shifter and pivot rod connections has the transmission out of the car, so who knows how much room you have to get at these parts? Good luck.

Here's a useful "link" on the MT linkage.
