Liftgate won't close, opens fine but when button on liftgate is pisued it won't close
I have a 2008 Q7 36 3rd row. Can anyone tell me where are the motors for these, I thought they were up in the top of the trim, but had a mercedes mechanic work on something else on my Q7 and he told me those were for the sunroofs. Told me the motor to pull down was on the bottom of trim of back liftgate. Please help

Nope, both lift gate motors are up in the roof on both the left and right side connecting to the hinge area behind the black trim. The one on the left looking forward is the mother unit and the right one is the slave unit, both have position sensors but are controlled by the left motor aka (J605)

You likely need a new battery, not gate motors.. mine did same thing when battery was dying, below a certain voltage the motors are locked out.. does it work if engine is running?

I replaced the battery and did not fix
Because they are sooooo expensive is there a way to run test with vagcom to determine which one is bad, or is there one that fails more than the other? Thanks

i'll repeat, turn engine on and see if gate closes.

Do the simple test Drealocks has advised to do, after that check control module 6D which is the trunk motors with your vag-com. If there is any internal electrical fault with the motors you will be sure to see some sort of logged event codes which will help put you in the right direction. Also the prices of the motors is not as bad as some of the other expenses the q7 has. I remember seeing new OEM motors on ebay ex Europe for around $250 us each last year, otherwise your local wreckers should be able to hook you up a set for much cheaper then that

Liftgate forgets its position
Sometimes my Q7 tailgate “forgets” it is in the up position.
I have to remind / reset it by pushing the latch in the tailgate into the locked position (as if the tailgate was latched in the closed position) by pressing my key across it.
Then I release the lock by pressing the middle trunk release button on the key.
You will hear and see the latch open back up again.
The tailgate close button then works again.
Hope this helps.
