Default 2012 A6 3.0T will not start

Live in Atlanta and it was pretty hot today. Parked for 20 minutes came out of the house and car would not start. It would turn over and try to catch, but would putter out.
I popped and opened the hood for a couple hours, came back and car fired right up. First time this has happened.
So, the question is "is there an electrical component that is prone to getting hot and creating a no-start condition?
Cam or flywheel sensor, etc....??
I pulled codes on my obd2 reader and nothing was showing.
Thanks!
Cosmo

My $2 bet is on a crank position sensor. This are notoriously famous for failing in heat. You need to get a full VCDS scan done which will likely indicate which sensor is bad. Without scanning you will just be replacing parts "shotgun style". OBD scans only show faults which trigger a CEL but you likely have a stored fault code that didn't trigger the CEL but will lead you to the correct sensor to replace.

And, it obviously isn't the battery since he was able to crank and crank.

Yeah, battery is fine.
I will check further on the crank sensor, but agree with you that having the codes pulled would be the best course of action. Will check a schematic on its location. I imagine there are two cam sensors and only one crank sensor.
