I got a VAGCOM and have been able to see what is making the check engine light come on which is handy. I have also taken my car to a few shops but so far the dealer in Escondido has been pretty reasonable. They put in my transmission and I paid slightly more than what was quoted by some of the garage's I had previously taken it too.

SoCal is a pretty big place, might want to be a bit more specific in the area you're looking..
If you're anywhere around San Diego, we can definitely help you out.
