Anyone have any experience with PUR digital (T1 ISP) in Atlanta? Used to be Biltmore Com. I believe.

They offer it in my new apt complex for $30 a month, $50 installation fee. Comcast is $40 a month for cable. I know T1's are fast, but I heard if they are heavily populated they can be pretty slow.

Interesting.

I'd go with Comcast...

Both can be subject to slow downs based on how heavilly the node is used, but a T1 is ~1.5 megabit connection while Comcast cable is as high as 6 megabit in some areas.

cable is faster downstream for sure, but a t1 has 1.5 mbps upstream vs. cables 512 & 768 kbps

it really depends on your websurfing habits. any kind of internet gaming and i'd take the 1.5 mbps both ways any day. normal websurfing and you'd probably never notice the difference.

Read the SLA. What speeds do they guarantee what % of the time?

"T1" is an industry term for a 1.544MBPS (DS1) circuit delivered a certain way. Do you get your own T1 for $30/mo (doubt it) or is it shared?

Bottom line-- read the SLA/guarantee. Find out if you can get out of your contract if they don't meet that guarantee. If they aren't providing enough bandwidth to service the number of subscribers, you're going to have issues during peak usage times.

Regardless, I'm sure you will get your $30/month worth. That isn't really hard to do. If you need serious bandwidth you'll need to get a real T1. That should only set you back $5-600 a month, depending on the mileage to the POP. Oh, and that doesn't include internet access. It's just a T1.

Hit the DSL for lowest pings. :)

When I switched a few years back, BellSouth had significantly better ping times to regional servers than my Charter cable service.

But things may have changed...

i have it. it sucks.

but they did just reduce my bill to 66/mo. cable+internet

I have it - not bad

It isn't bad at all. The speed it awesome. Anything about it being shared is irrelevant. All ISPs aggregate traffic at some point. It isn't T1 - it's ethernet. The uptime has been stellar. Only issue is that they lease you a private address and handle NAT for you. That's only an issue for real wacko tech-heads though, and actually a security enhancement for most ppl. If it's cheaper, do it.
