I'm ready for spring, too!
I can't wait for QdM, although I've still got a few things I want to get done, first.
One of those things is to buy a video camera that is up to the task of recording 'on-car' and 'in-car' video and audio.
I considered the GoPro Herocam. Because of the $199 price point (although, I'd probably also get a few other mounts), it was very intriguing. It's also very small and comes with a waterproof case. However, I was not that impressed with the video quality; given the specs, I expected better.
So, I've attempted to piece together something for nearly the same price, but with better quality and usefulness.
Here is what I've found:
<img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41zUiYA49tL._SL500_AA280_.jpg" alt="video camera" /> + <img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51GpPFMdBjL._SL500_SS75_.jpg" alt="memory card" />
on:
<img src="http://media.rei.com/media/ww/995ba6bd-93c2-4968-8ad0-dac63a277686.jpg" alt="camera mount" />
mounted to the roof rail on the Avant
And for audio:

This little guy will be mounted under the rear spoiler of the avant and connected (via the supplied extension cable) to the audio-in port of the camera.
And all for a grand total of....... $222!
The camera is an Aiptek Hi-Speed HD 720P Camcorder. It's very small, has an aux audio port and good battery life. It's capable of recording 720P at 60fps. I've watched several sample videos on vimeo.com and found the quality comparable to the Sony's and Canon's that cost 8X as much. I imagine there is a larger difference when you compare the original, raw footage, but on the compressed HD codecs that Vimeo and YouTube use, it's good enough for me.

This one might work
...although, it costs nearly as much as the camera.

I'd likely have to turn it sideways to make it clamp on to the roof rail without making contact with the paint.

I could just mount it to the roof. This would allow me to use the mount inside the car, too.
