Trip report: the REST of the story!
We broke fast at Cracker barrel, where we enjoyed nearly everything. After nearly getting t-boned while getting out for gas, we set out upstate and into the rain.
Discovered that a 'naked' MkIII has a REALLY bad drone at 3400 rpm (80 indicated, GPS 76). I needed hearing protection, and decided to downshift a bunch to break-in the clutch and break the monotony. The new cage will definitely change the harmonics of the car.
We stopped just west of Chattanooga and swapped drivers, with Reid enjoying swizeling the schtick on tghp. Driving US-127 over Signal Mountain was fabulous, even if it was foggy and we had some light traffic. We found near-terminal velocity of tghp, and she had no rattles, shimmies, or shakes to speak of. Event the alignment was true, surprisingly.
We need to change the tires desperately. Power on, we could induce understeer just from torque with the very willing ABA motor. The handling was pretty close to neutral in the wet; a good thing, and it inspired confidence that the cup kit was set well. We may need a RSB, but we'll see first.
The car actually performed flawlessly, and may have gotten 26mpg or better at the indicated speed! Wow. Needs shifter bushings, which we'll get from Greg when we pick up the car and cage.
We met Jon R and Daniella at the Brewery for late afternoon lunch in Chattanooga. They were solid: coming over from Manchester was no small feat on short notice! The food was great, and we walked about a bit to recover before setting off. And Jon is making great inroads organizing events in central TN. We're talking about a joint food run back to the restaurant maybe early this summer!
Mike and Reid were real troopers: we stayed up LATE the night before doing a fix on Mike's A4, and have the scratches to prove it. We got home after 5PM and collapsed chez moi for about 2h, and then we all went home.
Thanks Brothers!

Ouch! Won't get the Canon or Fuji superzoom for a bit....
as Terri and I are helping family in a small crisis.
I did no color correction either, and the flat (rain) lighting was playing havoc with the FOV and all that. But WE had fun. WHERE were YOU!? <zing>
