Default Buy a 2014 A6 TDI?

Hello to all.

I am the owner of a 2012 VW Jetta TDI, which I will be selling back to VW, and the former owner of a 2000 VW Golf TDI. I love these engines.

I'm considering purchasing a low-mileage 2014 Audi A6 TDI. I plan to keep it 10+ years.

My concern, of course, is the risk that any fix for the 3.0 TDI might adversely affect performance, reliability, and/or mileage.

I would not be personally comfortable ignoring the fix, and neither would be wife, so that's not an option for me.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

If your at all concerned about a fix that may never come than I wouldn't go with a TDI. You should look at Hybrids like the Avalon. This is a great car, similar in size to the A6, and has very good performance with luxury features. Toyota's Hybrid technology is well established and proven as very reliable. TDI is on its way out in the US after this boondoggle so go with something that will be around for a while. Don't get me wrong, I love my A6 but I will not be doing the "fix" and will be driving the wheels off her. My situation is different than yours and if I was starting from scratch the Avalon would be the way I would go. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the reply. I already have a Toyota (2007 Sienna minivan), and while it's been extremely reliable and useful I'm not interested in a Toyota to replace my Jetta.

I've had VW TDIs going back to 1999 and I really enjoy the low-rpm torque of these engines. I'd love to be able to have an A6 TDI that maintains that power after any fix is implemented. I don't mind losing some mileage -- I'm not a high mile driver.

I think it is safe to say that any fix will certainly impede that low end torque we all enjoy now. To what degree is anyone's guess. That is why I will not get the fix, I do not want any reduction in torque or mileage which were the two main reasons for getting the TDI version in the first place. Putting the diesel thing aside, it is an awesome car nevertheless so you might want to consider the gas version if your not concerned about losing mileage. I would recommend the 3.0 and not the 2.0. I am a high mileage driver and having driven both versions, the 3.0 has comparable performance (power) overall to the TDI minus the great mileage and would be a good choice for you in your situation.

Yes, my alternative would be the 3.0T. I've driven an A7 with the 3.0T (beautiful car but rear visibilty is poor) and an A6 with the 2.0T, and I feel that if I'm going to spend this much $ on a car, I want to get the more powerful engine.

I am going to follow my better judgement (a/k/a my wife) and hold off purchasing an A6 TDI.

We're in no rush -- we've got 2 years (to sell our VW TDI back to VW).

Rob, when you do move forward, I strongly suggest you consider cars with the CPO protection.

Right - and one of my concerns is that Audi won't CPO any TDIs at the present time.

The dealer tried all sorts of Jedi mind tricks with me as to why this is no big deal. oh boy

Before you limit yourself to CPO only, make sure you know what buying a CPO car gets you vs a non-CPO car. I was initially thinking CPO was the only way to go because of the additional factory warranty Audi offers, but have since heard the extended coverage is actually limited and not the full coverage of the initial factory 4 year-50K mile warranty. I don't have the answer, but would definitely make sure I did before I excluded any non-CPO cars from consideration. FWIW I just purchased a 2014 A7 TDI with 15K miles on it (obviously non-CPO since it's a TDI). Before I hit the 4 year or 50K mile mark, I'll purchase an extended warranty with the most bang for the buck.
