Default EGR Valve Question

This seems like a lonely forum... :-)
Anyways, here goes...

I have the Touareg TDI and I have a question about the EGR system. There is a bit of a hub-bub about intake clogging on TDI Club forum. In short, many users are seeing pretty significant clogging of the EGR valve and intake passages caused by soot from the EGR sticking to the slight oil deposits left by the CCV. I've include a pic of the EGR valve from an '04 Golf TDI with about 20,000 miles to illustrate.

One suggestion has been to disconnect the vacuum line to the EGR valves (2 in my case, one for each cylinder bank).

On the plus side is that without vacuum the EGR valves will not open and will not introduce soot to the intake. On the down side is that the ECU will likely throw an error, NOx production will increase as will combustion temperatures inside the cylinders.

Any other negatives?

Should I disconnect the vacuum lines to the EGR?

Default 56,000 miles on my 03 TDI Jetta Wagon...

with no problems. Sorry I don't have more info.

BTW, how do you like your Touareg TDI? I would have seriously considered one if they brought them into California. Can you get 25 MPG on the highway?

Default No problems yet, either...but

...with that kind of soot running through the system, how can there not be (eventually)?

The most direct problem would be choking the intake with obvious problems. I take it you're not having that issue (neither am I). But if that kind of soot is running through the intake, it just can't be good.

My mileage varies depending on my driving technique, of course. When I mash the pedal, I definitely trade fuel for speed at a pretty quick rate. The truck tips the scale at ~6000# (more with my fat *** behind the wheel). So around town I only get about 17-18 MPG. My long-term mileage is around 22 MPG. On my last highway trip I was getting about 27 MPG @ ~80 MPH. I can get ~30 MPG if I'm going about 50-55 MPH and feather the pedal.

Needless to say - I didn't buy this truck to feather the pedal.

Default Those are impressive numbers...

I wish my FX35 would do that well. Although, I've not taken a long trip in it yet. The torque of your TDI must be very impressive!

No soot problems with the intake of my TDI, but an interesting (bad) possibility. Although, we just sold my father's '85 Peugeot 505 turbo diesel, with about 400,000 miles, and never had this problem. FWIW, I wouldn't worry too much.

Default Plenty-O-Torque (tm)

Yah...I have plenty of torque. It's rated at 553#-ft of torque at about 2000 RPM. Something like that...max HP is 310 or so.

Supposedly there are chips available that will get it up to about 750#-ft of torque and max HP of 380.

It's pretty damn quick off-the-line, too. I've not measured it, but C&D clocked 0-60 @ 6.2 seconds. A guy on the 'Tex got 0-62 @ 6.5 seconds.

Not too shabby...but wouldn't want to try auto-x.

:-)

Default Oh come on, try the autox...

you might surprise yourself. I saw a guy autox a Honda minivan recently. He actually knew what he was doing, so didn't embarrass himself too much. I might try it with my FX sometime...just to see what it'll do. It actually handles quite well.

553#-ft of torque!!! That's more than my brother's Chevy truck, with the Duramax Diesel! Sounds like fun!

Default I don't have a TDI, but do know a couple of people that do, and know 2 people that work in the auto

industry. One that worked specifically on deisel engines and another that worked in the VW ring. Both have mentioned in the past that the TDI is a super strong engine and "the car should fall appart before the engine". I wouldn't worry about your TDI if it is kept completely stock. You should be able to get 300k out of it easily!

Enjoy your gobbs of tq!
