everything going wrong at once, tapping noise, burning oil, black smoke...
1999 2.5TDI 150 hp, approx 200,000 km
Had a cam seal go a while ago, drowning the generator. Had it fixed at an independent shop, but shortly afterwards the engine developed a tapping noise.
Engine makes more black smoke than usual during acceleration, also it doesn't take much of a lead-foot to have the computer take over throttle control. I've been told it could be the exhaust part of the turbo getting restricted due to diesel soot, so it doesn't boost properly at low rpms, and when exhaust pressure gets high enough to spin it properly it spins too fast, giving too high boost causing the computer to take over the throttle. Does this sound reasonable?
The last few weeks it has also been making some white smoke at idle, checking the oil level revealed it to be at slightly below minimum, so I refilled to just below maximum. I'm pretty sure the oil level was where it should be just a month or two ago, so I suspect very high oil consumption.
Due to a large change at work the car has gone from doing a 50-50 mix of highway and city driving to almost exclusively slow city driving, rarely exceeding 40 mph. Guess going slow all the time isn't exactly healthy for a TDI?
Any ideas/suggestions about what to do or just what is causing the problems?
