Default Info on Q7 V12 TDI

I am looking for some info on the 6 liter Q7 V12 TDI Diesel engine.

1- Engine weight, including accessories, but not transmission.

2- Fuel consumption at 2,000 RPM to 3,000 RPM (peak torque) and at 4,000 RPM (Peak HP).

3- Engine external dimensions

4- Suitability to conversion to run on kerosene (jet fuel)

5- Suitability to run continuous at 2,500 RPM for upto 40 hours duration.

The application for this engine would be as an electric power generator for an airship design that I am working on.

I could use a turbine (such as the PWC PT-6) but I am betting on the total installed weight of both engine and 40 hours of fuel will be less for the TDI than the PT-6.

That and life cycle costs (installation and maintenance) will also be substantially less for the TDI than any turbine.

Since you are not getting any quick answers here, and I certainly don't know the answer, you might try the forums over at tdiclub.com

I'll bet there's someone over there who would love to help you put a tdi on an airship.

Thanks, Waiting for registration email.

BTW, I narrowed my engine search to the VW TDI because I need a lightweight engine in the 500hp class.

Diesels can be converted to run on kero. There are 2 makes flying now, but they are in the 175-210hp class; one is a conversion from diesel fuel, the other is a purpose design flying in a UAV. I also did not want to use an MB engine because the higher HP engines need the additive in the exhaust stream.

Also, the TDI is turbocharged, which is needed for higher altitude operation at high continuous power.

Good luck.
When you get on the tdi club bulletin board, you might try the "conversions" forum, since that's about people taking tdi engines and putting them into other vehicles. Or maybe the "motorsports" or "Q7" forums.

Thanks again.

Gonna try TDI 101 for newbies first, as usually this type of forum is most widely read by the experienced folk. The others are read mostly by those specifically interested by that sub topic. They will guide me to the most appropriate sub forum, my guess; the ones you suggested.
