Questions for the TDI gurus....
On a recent business trip, I accidentally put 10.2L of petrol in a brand new TDI belonging to Hertz. The fuel capacity is 55L. Therefore with a full tank it had an 18% petrol / 82% diesel mixture in the tank.
Car drove just fine back to the airport. No check engine lights, etc.
Now I look at my credit card statement and they have charged me an extra ~350 euros presumably to drain and re-fill the tank. I'm not disputing that... I earned it. What a bonehead move.
However, my questions are these: 1) How did they know? Do they somehow test for the presence of petrol? 2) My guess was that running 18/82 mix of petrol/diesel one time wouldn't harm anything. Am I incorrect?

Diesel and gas mixture; accidently speaking in a Rental car.
Hey Mr. Fun, good questions. This could happen to anyone and its likely to be an issue here in N. America as diesel's emerge in rental car fleets. Try www.tdiclub.com its a popular TDI site.
The gas in such a mixture has to burn right? Compression ignites the diesel and along so does the gas...em?? Maybe raw gas??? dunno.

http://www.tdiclub.com</a

it depends how far did you travel to the airport, you can still drive a vehicle about 40-50km before any symptoms of petrol will start to show, alot of diesel in fuel filter and pipes

not correct...pressures very different (injector pump)
They probably had to clear injector pump and pipes too but I do not know how they knew. Did you ever ask them?

petrol diesel discussion
