TDI Settlement question
Hi All.
I have a question about the settlement payment and I hope somebody can educate me on this.
I bought my 2015 A8 TDI about 1,5 month ago and before the purchase I went on VW website and verified that no modification has been performed for that vehicle.
So I filed the claim and it said that estimated payment after the modification completed will be $10,5K. Fast forward - after all docs submitted and dealer modified the vehicle I'm receiving the letter from VW, stating
I am eligible for only $5,200 and the reason is that the previous owner of the car received the part of the settlement as well before.
Does anybody have the experience with this kind of situation ? Is that possible that the previous owner would receive the payment not doing any changes to the car ?
Don't get me wrong - it is still good to get $5K, but $10K is much better
Thank you all.

Yes. If I recall correctly it was possible to file early on and receive 1/2 the settlement before having the fix performed. Better verify though. Been a year + since I dealt with all of this.

I received the first half of the payment back in 2017 without getting the fix. I have until April of 2020 to get the fix performed and get the second half of the payment.

I do not remember the "own by" date, but if you bought it after that date then you get half the fix money and I believe the registered owner at the own by date gets the other half. Same for the Bosch money. At least that is how it worked for my '14 A6. Somewhat disappointing that the person who got rid of it before the fix still qualified, but 4800 dollars and the money from my Passat buyback nearly paid for this car.

Yes the settlement came before the remedy was available and owners could get 50% and wait for the remedy to become available later and collect the remainder of the money. Not sure there is anyway to discover that ahead of purchasing the vehiclel and going through the claims process.
