Default TDI vs Gas

Why did Audi SCRAP the TDI engine despite the fact that even after the "fix" they are cleaner and get better gas mileage than the gas motor? Seems like they took a marketing problem and scrapped a superior product. I am not a techy, but trying to determine next steps after our 2016 A6 TDI is at the end of its 3 year lease. We love the gas mileage and performance of the TDI even after it was fixed. Mike

Probably multiple issues. EPA might have required the engine be completely re-certified whic his expensive. With the anticipation of reduced sales, for already a niche product that primarily cannibalizes 3.0T and SQ5 sales, the investment probably wasn't worth it. However, I think consumer sentiment will ease off and demand for performance and mileage will be there.

I love my current Honda Civic because its goes 0-60 under 7 seconds but I've gotten 51mpg highway depending on conditions. Gotten over 40mpg even going 75mph, 30+ around town. Has 2007 mid sized car interior dimensions and truck space.

Audi will probably do a "wait and see" approach and see how BMW, jaguar and domestic brands go with their engines. Plus they are meeting CAFE without needing it at this point and current administration is likely to freeze CAFE as they pull out of all things left leaning, because that supports the needs of their donors and base regardless of long term strategic and economic impact.

Mercedes which was the pioneer and sort of leader of luxury diesel cars also has stopped selling them in the U.S., I think it is a general trend as there are very few diesel offerings of any kind in the US for 2018. BMW has one of the 11 US offerings. I love my A8L TDI and have a long history with cars generally but writing seems to be on the wall and I personally believe electric cars are going to our future.

because that market is all but gone at this point, as the focus from engineering and dollars will be electric, for all brands. You'll see within the next 12-18 months, every luxury brand will offer it

The TDI was and is a great engine, but it's old tech at this point, and can't meet the new specs worldwide that are coming down the pike

Electric still has a range and charging time and still falls short on energy density. Great for commuters and soccer moms, but limited on a road trip without battery swapping or rapid charging of under 15 minutes every 200 miles

as soonastou go for range extending, the weight and cost of the IC engine kill you.

all of which is about to change as you'll see, the newest gen of cars coming will have 300+ mile ranges to them, and the current investment levels in charging stations, particularly along interstates is massive at the moment.

Were these engines reliable? I am looking at buying a 2011 2.0 TDI A3 with 75k miles.

VW/Audi is now starting to sell the fixed buy-back cars so bunch of inexpensive low mileage diesels coming to market. My Audi dealer mentioned that they were buying them on putting them on the used car lot.

I love my 2012 A3 TDI. Been an awesome commuter. A3 goes up and over Teton pass, WY daily and still gets 38 mpg. Teton pass is 10% grade.
