Timin Chain
I am a newbie here. I have a 2010 Q7 TDI with 187,000miles on it. I have performed all the required maintaiance myself and car looks brand new inside and out. Car is paid off and use to run perfectly. However, 3 days ago I noticed a slapping noise. I had a feeling I knew what it was but wanted to be sure. My conclusion was right. I need a new timin chain as the tensioniers are shot. I got a quote of $7K to do th work and realce TC or $9K for engine swap with new TC with 168K miles on it.
This seemd to be unreal to me. So, what route do you recommend or should I just cut my loss and buy somethign else? The job to replace TC apears to be rediculous. Is it worth it to repalce TC on TDI motor with 187K miles. I could see me doing it if the motor as going to get me to 350K. Not sure these TDi's can,
Thoughts?

I’m of the opposite opinion: do the repair and address anything else that’s readily accessible when the engine is torn down that far. I fully intend to follow this path with my ‘13 in another year or so when it hits 150k. I’ll likely only do it once but then again, a well cared for diesel can run for a surprisingly long distance. I’m over 130k on mine and have needed only maintenance so far. The only thing I can think of that’s not a scheduled item was the HVAC blower replacement about a year ago.
