Fuse box basics
I have an 2006 A3 and need some more electrical connections. Looking at the fuse box in the cabin, I see their are lots of unused fuse connections. Some even have the power lead connected on one side.
How can I make use of the existing unused fuse holders. I need the little piece of metal that the wire to the device connects to on one end and the fuse makes contact with on the other end (fuse clip). Are these sold anywhere? How do you specify them?
I also wanted to change my center console cigarette lighter from unswitched to switched. How do I get those little electrical connectors out of the fuse box. So I can move the power lead from a switched to unswitched source.
Thanks,
p.s. I've heard of fuse taps and piggy backs, wasn't really interested in those.

You'll need some repair wires (with terminal ends) and a terminal removal tool to move them around..
The repair wires have terminal ends that will simply snap into the open slots in the fusebox. The repair wire part number is 000-979-227. This part number is valid for B5/C5/B6 fuse boxes, but I have never confirmed that this is the same part for a B7 A3 (although it probably is).
The pin terminal removal tool can be purchased from ebay (look for a tool for "power timer" terminals), or from ASTtool.com (the S1556N tool).
Instead of going through all that trouble to use the fusebox for power, you can easily tap into the "30" or "75X" connections under the driver's side of the dash. Just remove the knee panel to gain access (you'll have to do this to get to the back of the fusebox anyway). You will simply need to add an inline fuse when using these terminals for power.
"30" = constant power
"75X" = load reduction switched power
