0.015 seconds of fame. Quotes from Ron Stein and Yours Truly in the UK's Car Magazine...
Awhile back, I was contacted by the British automotive magazine "Car" and ended up helping them test the new Nissan 350Z versus the Audi TT. I then invited Fellow SoCal TT Club member Ron Stein along for the ride, and we assisted Car on a number of different fronts.
I just received my copy of Car (10/02), and while it does contain a photo of Ron and me, it's all of about 1" squared. My face is about 1/8" but Ron got double the exposure, as his head is a full 1/4"!
Anyway, they did quote us, so here are their/our comments for the few who might care.
The Washing Powder Test
We ask TT owners: 'Would you swap yours?'
In Dynamics, the TT 225 can't get close to the 350Z. As an ownership prospect, it's a closer race. To access potential reactions from likely punters, we enlisted the help of two members of the Southern California TT Owners' Club. Meet Ron Stein (with beard) and Brad Willis (without).
'I think they did a very nice job," says Willis, who owns a shining 225 TT roadster and-to British ears-sounds almost exactly like Kevin Spacey. 'At this price it's well designed and the performance feels good.'
'It seems peppier than my TT,' agrees Stein, who runs a silver 225 coupe. 'It doesn't feel quite as solid, but it's certainly enjoyable.'
Quality is more contentious. 'It's a nice design,' says Willis, 'but I don't sense the fit and finish is quite up to the standards of the TT. In my car, everything that looks like aluminum IS aluminum.'
'We've been trying to get the message through to Audi,' Willis continues when we mention the V6 uber-TT. 'Hopefully they'll listen now. I think it's time the company upped the ante with its sole sports car.'
And Stein sounds like a Z convert: 'Looks good, seems fast...for the money I really don't think you could beat it.'
