10,000 mi. service. Two-hour loaner of DGreen 225, novice motor head comparison with 180FWD
Went to have 10,000 service this morning. (ya got a love it Cliff, calculated that this would be the weekend for 10,000 miles six weeks ago....pulled into dealership with a reading of 10,002 -- so I was off by 2 miles!!) Talked to my Salesman and asked if I could borrow the beautiful Desert Green 225C in the parking lot for a couple hours thinking they'd say "NO." They had no scheduled customers coming by for a test drive, so I filled out loaner forms and was on my way. Wanted to get an idea of what I'll do in two years: 1) buy out 180FWD Coupe that has had zero problems and will only have 30,000 miles on it 2) trade up to a 225C or 3) wait for the TTS. Number three choice wins.
Things I loved about the 225:
1) The power, who wouldn't. Had some real fun even under terrible driving conditions.
2) The Quattro. Q was unavailable when I needed to have a car, so went with FWD. It was raining torrentially here with flash floods. Felt much more sure of the car going 80 on the highway with rain so hard you couldn't see. It just felt more stuck to the road than my FWD.
3) The stick. Just a more crisp feeling throw (and, I have not had the FWD grind).
Things I didn't like:
1) Sorry everyone with spoiler, just not my cup of tea.
2) Mk II. After the two hours and back in my sprightly little FWD with no mods, just love the Mk I so much better. I do see a difference. Don't know enough about cars to explain it well (I'm trying to learn more, honestly), but my FWD is just sharper and more fun. I feel more in touch with the car and the road and where I want to go in the Mk I.
3) 19 miles on the 225 and it had the DV honk.
So if there is a TTS with a pop-up/retractable spoiler, a great sports suspension and Quattro, I'll be in it in 2002, or I'll buy out TeeTTer and wait until it is available.
FYI, I asked service manager if they had had DV complaints on the TT. He said they had not, but are having plenty DV complaints with the A4. I told him, "Guess what, you are, your brand new 225C TT has the honk. Go listen for it." Has the honk around 2500 - 3000 and has the coke bottle sound at around 5000.
Had Mobil 1 put in. How bad is $6.95 a quart...ah, who cares, saved me go getting it. They put in 15/50. (Okay, you can all tell me why that is wrong, now)
So, still in love with my 180FWDC, only thing I wish could be different at this moment is that I wish I could have waited longer for the 180Q.

Denny, re 15W/50 oil....
I too used Mobil 15W/50 on my 180 at the 5K service. However....I've been corresponding with the technical guy at Red Line Oil, a highly respected synthetic oil manufacturer, local too in Vallejo. From everything he has said a grade like 5W/30 (in a synthetic) offers both better protection at start up with a cold engine (flows better and sooner) AND at high temperatures (which surprised me).
Just my 2 cents worth. They're at redlineoil.com<p><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/keyfob.jpg">

180FWD vs 180Q.....(more)
Denny, having driven both, I have to say that I'm delighted with the Quattro! I've tried several times...under VERY safe conditions, of course...to make Fritz skid/slide on a slick street. Couldn't make it happen. My brother tried the same, with my permission of course, on a gravel road near Austin. Couldn't make it happen either. The car just feels glued to the road.
Actually, given the amount of rain here in Houston and given how badly some people drive (!!!!), I was afraid that the Quattro would give me such good handling in wet weather that someone with less control would run into ME!
I think I was just lucky that by the time I found out about TT's, the Quattro WAS available to order. It's quite an impressive system, isn't it?

That's what I thought. We'll see. Thanks for the URL. Figure now that I've changed to synthetic,
I can go change locally any time I want if I feel it's not working out - especially, as you mentioned, when it starts getting cold out. ;-)
