225 TT bad engine, Will a GTI engine work???

225 TT bad engine, Will a GTI engine work???
New to Forum,
I have a 2001 225 TT AMU engine code, belt snapped and bent valves, damaged every piston and messed up one cyl wall...
finding a AMU engine is hard for a decent price all the wreckers on car-part.com want near 2000$. So i can get AWW or AWPs all day for 400-500$ Will it all bolt up and perform no problem? From what i gathered the AMU 225 has a webbed block and 20mm wrist pins and a lower compression ratio, AWW has 19mm which i dont see a problem because i had a stage three gti on stock bottom end.. Seems like everything would be fine but i just want reassurance if someone has been in this position before..
