Default 3rd gear transmission grind update: my video tape worked!

For those of you who don't know, I (along with many others here) am plagued with the 2nd to 3rd gear grind at high rpms. I have been trying for the past 10,000 miles to demonstrate this to the dealer, but everytime I go in there, the grind seems to disappear. As I am quickly approaching the end of my warranty, I got fed up, so I got it on videotape last weekend to prove it to the dealer.

I just got back, where I showed them the tape, which has about 5 or 6 continuous clips of me gently shifting into 3rd with an audible "crunch" each time. When the tech saw it he knew right away that there was a problem and that the transmission will need to be torn apart. The service manager wasn't too happy, since this is an expensive repair and will tie up a tech for a week, but agreed. The tech mentioned that this will be the third TT transmission he has had to tear apart, which was comforting to me to hear. I am going out of town for business next week, so I told them they could have at it for the entire week... they said it might even take longer than that.

I'm going to save this tape, so if anyone has run into the same problem (unable to recreate it for the dealer) I'd be happy to make a copy and mail it out to you if you need to prove it to your dealer.

I'll keep you all posted on the progress. What a relief!

what color is your interior? If it is gray, I might want a copy of your tape!

Default What color is your interior? I have a db '01 as well.

And while not having the issue as serious as you, have always experienced what I've considered to be too much notchiness and the occasional 3rd gear "missed" shift at high RPMs.

Greg at Laurel in Westmont. He seems to be noticing that TTs have bad trannies.

Default I wonder how much the transmission costs if Audi will pay to tear it down and rebuild -->

instead of just swapping in a new one and examining the old one at AOA or wherever they do that sort of thing.
