5500rpm exhaust (?) resonance. Any ideas?

Default 5500rpm exhaust (?) resonance. Any ideas?

225 Quattro Coupe, all stock, 12k iles. I get a nasty howling resonance at 5200-5800rpm on spirited acceleration. Particularly in 1st, 2nd & 3rd. This is accompanied by an immediate lag in power, forcing a shift. (Normally I shift at 5k anyway as it gives best rev match, but sometimes...)

Certainly not the rev limiter as it's too early. Dealer(s) say no problem found. It still has the replaced Bosch DV as I've not had time to go Forge etc...

Evan was with me on Sunday and heard it too. I'd like to get the boys here in NorCal to fix it, as it's unpleasant and not normal, so would appreciate any helpful comments.

Default Several possibilities...

-'New' DV is also bad
-Wastegate default
-Exhaust leak..only apparant in higher rpms where highter gas pressures exist
-Split/tear in turbo plumbing (hoses going from turbo to engine intake. I repaired a A4 that had a 'howling/ripping' sound at higher rpms with a loss of power...found 1 inch split in 2" reinforced rubber hose where DV attaches.

Default Thanks Michael. I'm leaning towards the exhaust leak.

Sound really comes from rear ½ of the car. Also there's a strong exhaust smell in the cockpit after a bout of sustained thrashing at high revs.

I'll take her in again and get a full plumbing check done.

Default Now, that's an idea. Perhaps a real DV while I'm at it. And shocks, tires, FMIC, chip, etc...

But until I do all that, it would be nice to get what I've got working the way it was designed to.

Did you think it was exhaust too? Certainly sounded like it on Sunday.
