try to rent it for a month with the dealer
I drive mine daily, its very comfortable to drive, I've felt that cacoon feel maybe 3 times in the time I've had it, in other words for "me" its a rare thing. I'm 1/2 inch from 6' and still have room above me, I believe it was more the smaller windshield in front (our other car is a old Saab). I have a black on black TT coupe, I suppose with another color inside it might feel a bit differnt(more airy?), but I wouldn't trade the colors I picked one bit, black on black is where its at baby.
When I leave for work I actually smile at the thought of driving home.
I cant truly know the feeling you are having and I love the car and would recommend it to anyone but if you are concerned Im pretty sure you could work out a rental of the car for one month with the dealer just be sure to leave the price negotiating for later, let them know how serious you are but try to detach yourself from that new car enthrallment untel later after you make your decision and after you negotiate the price.

Coupe or Roadster - great as everyday cars!
My husband and I both drive them as our everyday cars ... I don't think we've ever felt "tight" or coocoon'ed in!
What kind of car do you drive now?

I just smoke crack :), yes Re: Really?
I've never heard of an audi TT but I have heard of other cars when they were new being loaned out for a couple of weeks. It all depends on how you approach the subject and how much they want some extra cash and a potential sale, if they want it and you are real (have the money and dont look like my father would say "a punk kid") then most things are negotiable even if they arent easily negotiable.
You might get them to give you a loaner car
I have been given a free brand new 2001 Saab 35+k car for two weeks when mine old Saab was in the shop(and the dealer was not making out on the repair bill). The dealer hoped to sale it to me even though he "knew" I was not interested, granted its not a higher demand lower production audi TT but it was a higher(to high imo) priced car, dealers are know to try to deal in order to get a potential sale.
Maybe the audi dealer has a loaner they can give you if the circumstances are right. ie maybe they'll let you spend 1,000-2k on a loaner car for 30 days. Whats the the insurance worth to you? For me I'd personally would think about things such as how much it would cost taxes and resale wise if you decided you couldnt stand the cocoon feeling later and wanted to sale.
optional things to negotiate on are if the money can be applied towards the car if you decided to purchase(however this might make price negotiation on buying more difficult later) and as far as dealer concerns only X amount of miles or penalty is incured and they have the option to swap it out with another coupe if someone just has to have the color you are driving.
course where I live there is an exotic car rental company and I know they had 2 black TT's because the one came in as the dealer said they traded one of them in. Not sure what the going rate to rent from one of those places is but I would say it would be alot steeper than trying to work something out with the dealer.
And lastly or maybe firstly drive to all the dealers in your area and test drive as much as you can, maybe you'll know after a good long drive. My pop has been given free rein of nice(bmw, audi) cars for the whole day, course he's in his 50's and has silver gray hair and they dont know he has a lead foot.

Only cocooning I feel is the safety cocoon knowing I have
a car with the best side impact crash test in NHTSA history.
Convex mirrors or European TT mirrors get rid of the cocoon feeling.
Were you expecting negative responses here? Mine is a daily driver, all year.
