Advice wanted: How Hot is too Hot (Engine & Water) - Long
I've been having some temperature problems. Guage spiking to near H (i.e. more than two lines above center). The dealer replaced fan switch, fan control unit and water pump. The problem is continuing. Really "heats-up" in NYC stop-and-go traffic approaching and in tunnels.
Thanks to a forum search I've learned how to use the "cheat" to get the climate control lcd to show the water or engine temps. I am continuing to monitor closely the rise and fall of the temps. Some of which can be expected (based on a careful read of prior postings.)
I was wondering if anyone had some advice of what temps would cause me to be really alarmed - either water or engine? If 90c is base line, what about spikes to 100+, 110+, 110c+?
I apologize if this has been covered, but I couldn't find it.
Although this started when I was chipped, even returning to the orginal ecu (saved for times like these) hasn't resolved the problem.
Related question -- would the FMIC help overall heat problems, or just impact air temp to the turbo?

I regularly see 100 - 110 for the coolant temp when the car is sitting still.
I have never seen my engine temp move off 90, though. If the engine temp is moving higher, I would be a lot more concerned.
Since your problem is showing up while you're moving slow in traffic, I can't imagine a FMIC would help.

Press the up-arrow and recirc buttons on the AC...
...Then you should see the display say 1C.
Once you have changed to that mode, use the **** on the right to change modes. 49C and 51C are coolant and engine temps, but I can't rmeember right off hand which is which. Select the mode you want, and press recirc. Just turn the **** again to select another value.
To get back to the regular mode, just press Auto or pretty much any other button.

Re: Just exactly how do you use the climate control to see engine/water temp??
From memory (which is fickle)
Push the RECIRC and UP Arrows at sthe same time.
Note the climat control display will change.
Turn TEMP **** until the display reads 51
Then Push the RECIRC again
The display will now (alledgly) display the engine temp
If you dial in 49 instead, it will display coolant temp.
(Corrections or verfications will be most welcome.)

Control range is 87°C to 102°C
Dealers are rated on warranty expenditures, so they have a vested interest in not servicing your car. The rating system is based on percentile not dollar amount, so the collective action of dealers cut their own throat.

Re: Control range is 87°C to 102°C
John -- Thanks for the response. I assume that youre referring to coolant temperature? If it exceeds 102c how worried should I be and what should I do?
