Default air intake

heard a roomer that its a bad Idea to install a cone filter because it will suck in more dirt as well as air. That you can get the same results by just making your intake hose bigger. Any thoughts?

Default Entraining hot engine air defeats the role of the intercoolers which is to lower...

charge air temperature thereby making charge air denser and more combustible.

Default more air

so if I bring in more air through the intake hose(by making it wider) it should up my charg???

Default Not exactly. AUJ was advising not to pickup hot underhood air for the intake...

which is what usually happens with a cone filter because about the only place it fits it is exposed to underhood air.

As you know, the intercoolers remove heat which was put into the air as the result of the compression it received in the turbo. Injesting hotter air (intake) just makes it that much harder for the IC's.

You probably can't help the intake a great deal, and you can hurt things. If you haven't modified your engine significantly, don't bother changing the intake.

My $.02

Default No bigger hose should not increase flow...just turbulence

Remember stock intake pulls at a certain cfm, by upping the size of the hose you run the risk or creating turbulence or a less stable air flow. I think a cone filter would make an improvement only if ambient underhood air was cold... ie winter time.. or if you were able to route some kind of scoup with a pick up point in the front grill somewhere so that filter is picking up colder outside air as opposed to underhood air heated by motor... one thing to keep in mind is that many air intakes although they sound better actually decrease horsepower due to difference in air density based on temperature... save your money and buy a better intercooler... just my opinion

Default Changing the air intake won't do anything for you Coop. Just got to break down and buy a chip.

The mass flow sensor is calibrated to the area of the intake tube and nothing can be done to change its calibration other than reprogramming the engine management system. Increasing the tube area before the sensor won't buy you anything either because the flow is restricted at the sensor.

Default What about improving air flow to the ICs? Would this make any difference? Also...

Someone on the racing site suggested the stock airflow pattern over the IC to the brakes is a significant portion of the braking problem due to hot air reaching the brakes.

Seems like more air flow through the IC area and to the brakes might help two areas.
