Default Any idea why the soft-roof-glass for the Roadster is not a spare part? ->>>

I am probably an idiot - I put the bag with my notebook in the compartment behind the seats, where the soft-roof of the TT Roadster folds. It was unusually warm November day, so I decided to uncover the roadster and to catch the last warm sun rays...What a BOOOM I heard from the back...The rear windows just exploded. Stupid, very stupid :-(((
The Audi Dealer just quoted me 3500 EUR (3500 USD) for a new soft-roof with a new glass. They said "The glass is not a spare part."

Is that true? Any ideas?

By making the rear glass non-replaceable they can make it less succeptable to leaks

I presume you didn't tell them about the actual cause...

Default That's the good thing about Bulgaria...

Nobody would be surprised to hear that some punk has broken the glass to steal a leather jacket or something...At the end of the day the insurance company is owned by the mob...

Default it might not be easy, but I bet it's possible

disclaimer: I haven't looked carefully at the construction to be sure.

but, if you can GET the glass from somewhere (if Audi doesn't sell it, maybe you can get one from a wrecked TT that managed to rip the top but didn't end up breaking the rear window?), then it might still be possible for an upholstery shop to take things apart and sew it in place.

I'm sure it'd be a pain but it would probably save a lot of money...

Default My company makes a new type of plastic hard windows for convertibles...

Similar problems with convertible cloth tops for sailboats as well. Removable windows make life a lot easier, but are more prone to leaks. Miatas, Jeep Wranglers both have removable windows. BMWs, Audis, Porsche's don't.
