Default Anyone ever get a ticking or clicking sound from timing belt tensioner or the water pump?

I've been trying to track down an intermittent loud clicking sound that I get. I haven't noted any pattern in when this occurs, driving conditions, temperature, etc, it just comes and goes. Thought it might be valve noise, potentially from oil starvation but had a new oil pump installed last week and I still get the noise. Definitely related to engine speed, not wheel speed, and more likely to happen with heavier load on the engine, so wide throttle, low RPM type situations.

I pulled the timing belt cover and it doesn't look like anything is interfering with the belt itself. Have also ruled out axle/driveshaft issues because it is depended on engine RPM not vehicle speed.

Thanks!

Could be a bad lifter - but those types of noise are a PITA to figure out

Default I've got what seems to be lifter noise too but that is much quieter

like a background noise, this ticking is louder than that and a slower frequency. The valve noise is more of a fast ticketa-ticketa-ticketa where this is a tick-tick-tick. I gotta record it next time it happens.

Default The tensioner should be faster as the pully is smaller.

Noises are a real pain to figure out even when you can stand next to the engine.

My tensioner made a whirring noise when it was failing... not sure if that helps at all.

yeah, if I could reproduce it with the car parked it'd be so much easier

Default The whole TB setup is only about 6k miles old

was thinking something might be defective. Definitely not getting a whirring noise though.
