Default Audi tt front strut "tops" replace

Why do we remove the whole strut to a bench? What if we did not!
1. remove the dust boots under the "bonnet" hood.
2. Spark plug socket with the 7 mm Allen wrench in the center, remove the upper nut and upper top plate
2a.It is a shock and will push below the wheel well top RIGHT? WITH A 1 X 1 10 LONG BLOCK OF WOOD (Sorry not converting any wood dimensions to MM.)
2b.Place another 2 x 4 block of wood under the wheel well to close the upper mount hole, let the strut rod extend upward as it should to hold it in place for now.
2c. now every thing is in the wheel well
FIRST QUESTIONS, What is the pressure required to push a brand new and good strut downward?
First test, If the strut rod pushes too easily downward with the 10 1 x 1 block of wood, the strut is worn out and it all needs replaced any way. Back to the bench.

Let's get this this far and I will edit further, Thanks
