Default Bad Instrument Cluster

My temp gauge isn't working correctly and is pegged all the way to the right. I had the car checked and it's running at the right temperature, but the gauge is reading wrong. All of the other gauges are working fine. I was quoted a cost of replacing the instrument cluster at $1000-.

Someone on another board asked if I had the timing belt replaced recently, which I have. As a matter of fact the gauge problem started the day my timing belt was replaced. The other poster suggested that my thermostat may have gone bad. That would be welcome news as I'm hoping that I don't need to spend $1000- to take care of the problem, but if it was my thermostat it seems like my car would be overheating.

Any thoughts or comments on this? Thanks!!

Default It may be the temp sensor rather than the thermostat...it's on top along the left side of the engine

Default Cause>>>>effect.....????....>>

Did you take it back to the guys that did the job? Could be a thermostat, could be an air bubble in the coolant lines, Could be a temp sensor. Check the actual temps with the HVAC controls...Details in the FAQ..

I just did a search using the words "instrument cluster" and apparantly there is a class action lawsuit against Audi for this problem.

I'm hoping it's one of the other issues that you guys mentioned above. Thanks!

Highly unlikely the cluster went bad the same day you had the TB done...

Default It's not your thermostat or your temp sensor or your timing belt

If your car is running at the right temp your thermostat is doing its job, and if the AC display shows something between 90 and 100 celcius then your temp sensor can't be what's driving the cluster to peg its needle.

BTW, my cluster started doing this exact same thing (1 notch below max at operating temp and middle of the gauge at cold start) within 1 week of my timing belt and water pump and thermostat and temp sensor replacement. Except that my cluster started doing this BEFORE all of the above were replaced. Replacing them all did nothing to fix the cluster. Welcome to the club.

133T,

so are you saying that it is the cluster? I contacted the law firm that is representing Audi owners in the class action law suit. If it is the cluster than I will add my name to that law suit.

Default No, He's not saying that..>

Have you checked any of the other ideas suggested? Check the Temps with the HVAC controls first.

Check the temp yourself....

Default I will go out on a limb and say that the sensor is the problem.....

Most probably it was left disconnected after the TB replacement.
