Default Battery Drain - Audi TT Quattro 2002

Hi their,

I recently purchased my TT Quattro 2002 a few months back, and it drove lovely. Then last month, the battery began to die quite quickly. One night, I was doing the night shift, so I left my car at 10pm and when I went to go start it at 8am it was dead. I called out Green Flag, who tested my alternator etc and stated that I need a new battery. Since then I have purchased a new battery and the same thing is happening. It's dying within a few hours. I also noticed that when I turn my key it starts but then suddenly dies, I have to put my foot on the accelerator while turning the key to make it start without it dying out.

I have looked online and it states it is the AMP. I have looked for the AMP but I am unable to locate it. I have found the original CD changer on the passengers side next to the back seat. The CD player is a state of the art one which was installed before I bought the car. I asked the previous owner if he installed the CD player, which he did not, his friend did for him.

Any ideas where this AMP may be?

Best Wishes

Ryan

I see no "AMP" in the service manual. Id buy one and use the guided fault finding steps.

Otherwise, my guess is a leaky diode in the alternator is causing the current drain.

Thank you for getting back to me.

When we tested the battery it was drawing 8amps when everything was turned off? Something was drawing that current. Could that be the alternator though?

First thing I would do is pull fuses 1 by 1 while measuring the current. If you pull a fuse and it still draws 8 amps it is not that circuit so replace that fuse and pull the next one.

It sounds like you have an aftermarket stereo or at least parts of the stereo so it is possible whoever installed that did not use fused connections, or installed their own power lines with their own fuses which could be anywhere. I don't know how you came to the conclusion it is the amplifier but the factory amp, if installed (I don't know if it was standard or an option), is below the rear passenger side speaker in the coupe or behind the wall behind the passenger seat in the convertible, accessible via the trunk.
