A visit to the local auto-zone (where they read the codes for free) indicates a MAP Sensor issue...
Engine is idling rather roughly, and has a flat spot or two - must be the cause, right?
Is this a common failure?
Are MAP sensors expensive?

MAF sensor?
they are about 50-65 new, but apparently VWs have remanuf MAFs that work on our cars and are cheaper.
I believe that a rough idle may be a sign of a glitched-out MAF...but I am no expert with MAF probs.
