Check engine light, $1,600 later...
Thought you all may want to hear this.
I had a check engine light on, so took it to my mechanic. The code said the camshaft and crankshaft sensors did not agree.
The most likely (and cheapest) fix was a bad sensor. I agreed to start with that. With both sensors replaced it was apparent that something more serious was going on.
It turns out the timing chain was streched. So he replaced both upper and lower timing chains, tensioner, and a sprocket that was badly worn. He sent me a photo of the sprocket, the teeth were about 25% of the original height.
After more than a week, the car is almost back together. Until I get a call this morning. It was back together last night, but now it's leaking coolant. This was not a pre-existing problem so the mechanic will fix it on his dime, he's good about that.
I'll give you an update if it gets more interesting.

got the car back
I got the car back. The bill rose to $2,200; but the mechanic said he lost money on the job.
Now the airpump makes a clacking noise for about 30 seconds when you start the car from cold. Mechanic says he "can't get to it" whatever that means. Only makes the noise first thing in the morning and it's not very loud.
Had fasteners and covers missing when I got the car back which I'm not too pleased about. I'll have to bring it back to have a cover replaced because I don't know where it goes. It was sitting under my wipers when I got the car home.
