I have just phoned up to order a roof rack and the dealer told me (un-prompted) that he would be happy to chip my TT whenever I fancied it.
What a relaxed attitude from a dealer!
Would I really have to tell my insurance company?
I am quite tempted now!

NO, don't tell your insurance company! it is none of there business!
Would you tell your insurance company when you put on different wheels and tires? When ou lowered your car? This makes not sense! If anything they would NOT cover you and most likely drop you!
What dealer is this? What part of the country?

I see you are from the UK. I assume your response is accurate there, but.....
in the U.S. there is no way to void an insurance policy because someone chipped their car. We had this discussion about six months ago, and I was told then that the rules in the U.K. were much tighter. I learned then, that jurisdictions are different enough that one should note what area of the world's rules they are stating.
