Default Custom suspension setup - part 2

I thought I'd post an update about building my own suspension for the TT. Long story short, it's coming together and better than I expected.

The front still needs a lot of work,
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/9/tt_custom_front.jpg">
but between business trips and wifey time, it's a bit tough
In any case, I was able to create something that works for the front and kept the shocks at full soft. My calculations predicted a targeted ride height of 25.5", and lo and behold, it was dead on.
I may end up getting a good friend who wants to manufacture custom performance products to completely change the front suspension system. But in the interest of time, what I put together will do until some welds fall apart And yes I factor safety even with failure. It will just make loud noises when things happen.

The rear is practically done until an autoX event this Sunday.

Then I'll have to fine tune the outer springs and the valve adjustments. Note that I am not using a swaybar because my calculations indicated I have too much spring to even need one.

And sure enough that is the case. The car exhibits slight corner entry oversteer, and neutral to slight oversteer corner exit.

First and foremost, the ride is not much harsher than what it was before. Kidneys and liver are safe Seriously, it's pretty smooth until I hit a series of bumps at speed where I am reminded of it's compliance with the surface.

Yesterday is the first time I took it out to commute. It was raining so I can't quite test how it handles. In any case, I though I'd hit it a few times to see which side comes around first. To my surprise, 2nd gear, steering wheel turned about 45 degree and punch, the front tires just bit in the wet. Usually this is the case where the car just plows.

Today was dry day and took my favorite corners to work. Whoops! Bad idea not having any harnesses as I now slide off the seat with jeans on
So, yes the car corners like it is on rails with our Falkens on. I can for sure say that this now outhandles our A4 which is pretty much CPP'd to the brim.

Here's a <a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/tt/msgs/1605035.phtml"> link </a> to my first post about it when I acquired the stuff.

So next on todo list is finish the front,
Then fab up seat and harness brackets
Switch to fatter wheels and tires

Default Sure! Do post your harness install also cuz I'd be interested :)

I'll also plan Monterey autox (Marina), so if you like to come down and do fun runs with it, you're welcome too. I'll keep you posted.

yeah, i'd doubt you'd need a rear bar w that much spring. any idea of it's combined rate?

Default About 680 dual rate when compression drops to below 25" ride height.

But 395 only when uncompressed above that height. What this does is not lift the rear under braking (for more controlled braking corner entry). Then the dual rate spring action combats the rear from squatting which prevents front end lift - and helps improve corner exit under acceleration.

Note that since the rears are inbound, the actual spring rate over the center of the tire is divided by 1.63 (motion ratio). Hence a stock rear spring has an effective rate of under 100 lbs/in at the tire. If you have a 400 lb spring, it's effective spring rate is 245lb/in over the rear tire.

The other shock location gives an effective spring rate of times 1.1. Hence 300 on it is 330 over tire.
