Default Cv boot problem

Hey guys I'm new to this page.

So yesterday I was back out of my friends driveway and my lower control arm snapped. When it snapped I believe it pulled the boot off of the cv joint and all of my grease/oil came out. I haven't had a chance to take a look yet and see if the joint is still intact. Assuming the joint is fine how easy is it to just put a new boot on and what kind of grease/oil would I use? Do our cars take a specific? Mine is an 01 TT Quattro 225 btw.

Thanks in advance for help.

To install a new OEM or OES boot; Remove driveshaft from vehicle. Remove CV Joint from driveshaft. Remove & Replace boot. Reassemble. Reinstall driveshaft. the wheel bolt is a torque to yield (stretch) bolt. You must replace it with a new one and properly torque it per the service manual instructions.

You will need a 3/4" drive torque wrench (a torque wrench with 250-300 ft-lbs. capacity)and the proper hex(allen) drive wrench. The inboard CV Joints use 12 point internal drive tools to remove (10mm IIRC) so you'll need that tool as well.

The grease is a molybdenum type for CV Joints. OEM and proper OES CV joint boot kits come with a grease packet. Most will include a new stretch bolt as well. If using OEM from a dealer, you can always buy a stretch bolt if the boot is not part of a service kit.

Thus, depending on your capabilities and tool selection; this could be easy or it could be a royal PITA.

Also another option I would consider, is getting the entire drive axle rebuilt or replaced with new or re-manufactured while you have the damaged one out. Raxles is a reputable re-builder, and you may have one (axle re-builder) in your area. No telling the damage to the CV bearings etc. when it pulled apart on you ..... just a suggestion, and I'm not endorsing Raxles, just know from the forums they have a good reputation.

If you replace the OEM drive shaft with a Chinese $80-$150 special; be sure to save you original ones so eventually you can go back to them (replace the bad CV Joint on it) or get a core charge waived for the OEM part from a dealer. There's a reason one OEM CV Joint costs more than an entire junk halfshaft with two CV Joints.....
