Default Diagnostic Tool Advice...

Looking for advice on which diagnostic tool to buy and have found a couple of options, hoping someone can guide me. I know the standard answer in these forums appears to be the Ross-Tech VCDS, which appears to be robust and powerful. I'm not a mechanic by trade but am comfortable around engines, so I'm not sure I'll use all the functionality in that system. Does anyone have advice on a less expensive alternative?

The two others I'm looking at are the Maxiservice VAG505 by Autel, being sold on Amazon for around $140 (
Amazon.com: MaxiService VAG505 scan tool for most VW/ Audi/ Seat/ Skoda vehicles: Automotive Amazon.com: MaxiService VAG505 scan tool for most VW/ Audi/ Seat/ Skoda vehicles: Automotive
). Any suggestions on which to go with?

Also, I know the Bently's Manual is the bible for Audi's, is there a real difference between the Digital and Paper versions other than media?

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

My post appears to have gotten cut off. My other option is the Foxcon scan tool sold by ECS for around $199. Hoping someone can give me some good advice on which to get.

Don't know anything about the Bentley manuals; don't have any.

As far as diagnostic tool, I use VAGCOM, but, I use a dumbed down version of it which used to be free. All I bought was the cable which was $20 or so. It has served me well for 5 years to diagnose all Audi modules and codes. I haven't felt the need to do any logging or anything the full version gives.

Less expensive?? Dude, VCDS is free and you can download it from the ross-tech site directly -> Ross-Tech: VCDS: Downloads: Current Release and Manual

Ross Tech is the place, the right tool for the job. Hex+USB+CAN is the one to buy for our models and future model Audi's and VW's. Real diagnostic information is provided.

If you want a simple diagnostic tool that can scan for all fault codes and would want to change the common mods, an inexpensive option would be the Carista iOS or Android app and their Bluetooth ODB2 dongle. $39 for the dongle and the app is free unless you want to make mods then the PRO option is $19.99. They also support AudiWorld as a sponsor. Do an AW search for Carista. Several threads.
