die window regulator -- die!
i won't lie. this diy sucks. it took me 4 hours taking my time and making sure everything was aligned correctly. original thread here. i've done a lot of work to this car, by far this was the most unenjoyable project.
i followed this write-up and found it to be very helpful.
i could do it quicker next time, but removing the old rivets and getting the new ones in takes some doing. i used an air grinder and a dremel to grind the heads off the rivets -- and you need to be andre the giant to pop the new rivets in.
f##k you window regulator.

f##k you broken bowden cable.

--------- parts -----------------
Window Regulator 8N0-837-461 (Drivers, Left, Side) $130
Window Regulator Rivets N-904-786-01 (qty-8) $4.32
bought them at genuinevwaudiparts.com

i called the dealer and they quoted over $500 for parts and labor. i figured they wouldn't be as meticulous as i would be and it wasn't worth the hassle of driving back a second time because of incorrect alignment or general dealer BS.

yes it did -- it basically took a long time because it was cold out.
did you replace your regulator at some point? it is not for the faint of heart.

the cable snapped. i could see it when i pulled the door card off.

See, my thinking on a snapped cable is that it's bad design - should never rub or bend >
at the connection and those should be the only reasons a cable of that size fails - that cable should be stronger than half the other components in the car.

agreed -- plus the idea of *riveting* the cable/regulator system >>
to the subframe of the door says to me that audi expects the part to last longer than the life of the car -- or else it would be nut and bolt - yes?
