Do any of the hidden radar detectors actually work - e.g.: Passport SR1 or SRX? Stay with standard?

Yes, they work from review of mags. Just saw review of detectors and
Valentine 1 scored 97/100 with better scores than Escort 8500 on X band (which I don't pay attention to anyway) but the real kicker was that V1 is much better on Lidar. They look about equal on K and Ka band. So it may be worth the xtra $100 for an arrow and better Lidar
