about a D90, so I called the sales-monkey and gave the specifics of what I wanted - 1994 or 1995 around $30k (this means the car'll probably have fairly high miles) w/ a manual tranny - he warned me against the 1994 model w/ manual as it was not a synchronized tranny. Does that sound right? If so, what implications does that have on driving the car? You would have to rev match more closely and double-shift downshifts, right? anything else?

Why spend that kinda cheese on a becah car, can you think of all
the peanut butter you could buy for Henri and yourself for that amount of $$$
Why not find a semi-decent shape CJ and spend a few G's restoring it to your liking, you could paint it pink or candy striped etc..
My buddy just bought a CJ6 and it is one of the coolest lil 4x4. It is extended like the Scrambler chassis but instead of it being on the end like a pickup, it is extended in the middle so it is more like Hummer.
You could find a nice C6-7, drop some duckets in it and have a really nice beach vehicle and pocket 20K of your proposed 30K beach vehicle.

b/c (oh, dim-witted one) when I get tired of it, I'll very easily be able to recover whatever I paid
for it... and I think they define style - in a designed like a rough-hewn-brick, kinda way... :-p

a car which one drives to the beach (and other places) on the weekend, when neither your destination
or timeliness of arrival are pre-determined and in which insufferable build quality is "charming" rather than exasperating.

I am the dimwitted one? You are the one that wants to buy
an overpriced Jeep so that you can look good in front of your style conscience friends. Sometimes there is such thing as funtion over form, and a beach truck falls into this category IMHO

Don't be ridiculous! These vehicles are FAR more capable than anything Jeep ever made. How do
I know? Well, for starters I drove one for ten weeks in the foothills of the Himalays, in Nepal and in forests of India. Got any such points of comparison, Sparky?
