DV sound (we need a FAQ)
Sorry to beat a dead horse. And to prevent this from happening in the future, perhaps we can put together a FAQ.
In any case, I'm really wondering what the DV problem sound really sounds like. I don't have any other TTs to compare against so I really don't know if I have a problem or not.
I got my car as a demo with 1200 miles on it so it may or may not have already started.
There is a whirring noise that starts around 2000rpm but I'm pretty sure that is the turbo spinning up. Also, when I lift of the throttle at high RPMs there is a little bit of a thunk.
So, what does the problem sound like exactly? Perhaps if somone could link to a sound file, we would all know for sure...
Thanks,
Joe

I'll be trying that with an MD recorder at the weekend.....
...but in my case both the honk and the flute are barely audible and not very intrusive.
I'll give it a go and get some wavs together. Maybe if someone else does the same we can all judge whose honk and flute is bigger! ;-)

There are two sounds......
1) the "coke bottle" or "goose honking" sound that occurs at around 2500 to 3000 rpm, and
2) the "rusty screen-door hinge" clunk that occurs when you back off the throttle quickly as when you're snapping through gear changes or driving quickly on a bendy road.

We have a FAQ. Forum member BZ aka BwanaZulia is keeping it.
Anyone remember the web site?
Ivan

Yes, we need a FAQ!
With up-to-date easy to find information. There are several useful FAQs now, including one on audiworld that answer some questions but a lot of it is out of date or not relevant. And the FAQ that mentions the diverter valve issue (at auditt.org I believe) claims it only exists in the 225.
Someone should collect all of the knowledge of the people here (there is quite a bit!) and maintain a FAQ, and post it to this board once a week.

Re: There are two sounds......
Hmm, I'm don't think that I'm getting any of those sounds. When I back off the throttle I can hear a rubberized thud. I think that when the DV fails it will turn into a rusty screen door. Does that sound right?
Is the coke bottle/goose honking sound loud or do you really have to listen?
Where in the RPM range does this sound happen in? If you leave it at 2500 does it go away or fade? Or does it cut off at a higher RPM?
Does the engine have to be warmed up to hear the sound?
Does the car have to be under load to have this happen? In other words, can you rev the engine in neutral and hear the sounds?
Sorry for all of the questions. I'm sure others are wondering the same things.
Thanks a lot!

Re: DV sound (we need a FAQ)
I've noticed that sound almost from the start, but attributed it to just some strange resonance to resolve when I went to the dealer next time. As I haven't been to the dealer for a little while, I didn't even bother with it.
The noise occurs only at a specific RPM, not every time, and disappears if you rev up or down. It sounds like you lightly tap a very quiet horn -- in fact, at first I thought that I accidently hit the horn.
I guess now that I know it's a valve, I should probably make my way to the dealer :-]
-ilya
