Engine Stalls, wont start for a while
I need your help. I am completely stumped by this...
I have a 2001 1.8t quattro AMU 225.
The Problem:
The cars first start for the day starts fine, runs normally. after about an hour or so of driving the engine just shuts off while driving.
At this point the car wont start again. It turns over very strongly but makes no attempt to start.
After letting the car sit for about 45 minutes the car will then start again.
My diagnostics so far:
When the key is turn to the "on" position I can hear the fuel pump turn on then turn back off.
Hooked up the Ross-Tech scanner and found no DTC's from OBDII except for a complaint about the secondary air pump (but thats been there a while)
Im stumped. At first i thought maybe coil, but I think each plug has its own coil built in, so if it was that, I would think that it would at least try to run badly.
I have my doubts about fuel, in my past experience bad fuel pumps will at least start a car after priming.
Most of my experience is with older cars that have plugs, wires, coils and rotors.
Any suggestions, or things I should look at? as I said, I am stumped.

That is a pretty classic description of a failure of the crankshaft position sensor. It is on the front of the block near the oil filter.
I have never had to do either of mine but I’ve read of many folks who have.
