ESP in ice and snow

ESP in ice and snow
The manual of my TTQC says the ESP should be turned off in slippery conditions. Any comments on how the ESP performs in ice, snow and rain. We're in the midst of our yearly Dallas ice/snow/slush. Much thanx

I agree, I think ESP is designed more for dry or raining pavement.....
I don't think it can cope with snowy or icey pavement. Some have reported problems driving in deep snow or ice with ESP on. The owners manual tells you to turn off in slippery conditions.

I disagree, I like ESP in the snow/slush/ice
I find ESP performs very well in slippery conditions. The ESP manual supplement says to turn it off if you are driving through deep snow or are trying to rock the car out when you are stuck. You need your tires to spin freely in these conditions.
ESP definately slows me down a bit when cornering when it cuts the throttle. That probably means I am trying to accelerate too quickly anyway.
As an experiment, I tried the same corner at the same speed with and without ESP. With ESP I felt the ABS kick in and the throttle cut back, I fishtailed a little. Without ESP my back end whipped out into the middle of the street. YMMV

Re: ESP in ice and snow
I've noticed that I keep switching ESP off every time it's slippery (well, actually it's slippery all the time in Finland this time of year). Driving is just not fun with the ESP on - safer of course, but boooring...

Interesting...a surprise!
My ESP + TT returned from Texas ok, but my owners manual did not. The new replacement does not have an ESP supplement...is there anything else I should know?
It was interesting attempting spins in eastern MA this weekend...ESP does no-fun weird things!

ESP should not be turned off in slippery conditions...
Sure it's more boring, but that's where ESP does its job by keeping you and your car safe. Just last night I was coming around a curve that had a little ice covered by snow. Since the ice was covered, I didn't see it, and was going a little too fast for ice. I noticed the back end starting to come around, and then I saw the ESP light come on, and the back end wasn't coming around any more. Had I not had ESP on, I probably would have at least ended up hitting a curb.
I leave ESP on all the time except when I know I'm in an area where if I get out of control, I won't hit anything...Like empty parking lots.

Re: Where? Rovaniemi?
Especially there ;-) but generally in most parts of Finland except for the coastline areas in the south.
In fact I was on a business trip in Rovaniemi (about 140 miles from where I live) a few weeks back and I couldn't wait for the business meeting to end because I was in a hurry to have fun with my TT in Ounasvaara (follow the link). There's a wonderful twisting uphill road to the top of the mountain and it was very icy and dark. I was really enjoying myself but all those Japanese tourists must have thought I was crazy...
