Default First post - Window question

New to the forum. Son just got a 2001 TT Turbo Quattro. But I'm the mechanic in the family and the hardcore car nut. Have owned and restored several marques but never an Audi. Don't actually know if his TT is the 180hp or 225hp version. How do I tell?

The drivers window does not drop a 1/4" when opening the door as it does on the passenger side therefore it binds on the window seal. I heard about resetting it by lowering and holding 5 seconds then raising and holding for 5 seconds. Is that the extent of reset? The one-touch up or down feature seemed to go away but no change in the lack 1/4" window drop issue.

Any suggestions?

i think to do the resetting for the 1/4 part of it... shut both doors ,, take the key put it in the drivers door, turn it to the lock position, hold it till it beeps, go back to the middle then turn it to the lock position one more time.. then go to the un-lock position till both windows are all the way down. hold for 3 sec. go to the middle then once more to the unlock ,
then use the key once more to roll both windows all the way up.

I have the same issue with my 01. Mine is the microswitch went bad. One way to tell if it is the microswitch, start the car and open the door, if the heads up display does not show the door open, (mine doesn't) its the microswitch. OR if you start the car, shut it off, and open the door with the key still in the ignition, the interior light will not come on OR if the auto down/up feature does not work after doing the reset its the switch.

If it is the microswitch, do a search on this forum cuz there is some GREAT advice on how to fix it. (I still need to try it, just TOO busy at work.)

Hope this helps.

Default 180 or 225--

180s are all 5 speeds and the intake manifold has the throttle body on the passenger side. 225s are all six speeds and have the throttle body on the drivers side end of the intake manifold.
Good luck with the window. You got good advice in the other posts. If it is the microswitch in the door latch you can replace that with one from Radio Shack

Thanks for the info. Apparently he bought the 180HP version which is just as well as its a lot of car for an 18yo and his first.
I read about the microswitch replacement etc so will look into this weekend.
Anything special to get the wheel caps off for changing a tire?

Still haven't looked at the microswitch but the test with the dash indicator did not light up when the door was open. I must wonder then if the alarm would sound if the drivers door is opened despite the alarm being set? Seems the car would not know that the door is open if the switch is bad. yes?

Not sure about that. There are numerous write ups about changing the switch and I just completed it last week and, had I had all the parts and tools ready, it would have only taken 45 mins. You will need to get a special 12 point star wrench (8mm i think), I got mine from NAPA ($7.24), a 4-40 bolt and nut (or 2-56 would work cherry but could not find any in town), and the microswitch from radio shack. It is a normally closed circuit (so when the button is pushed it will ohm out with .3 ohms resistance, NOT OPEN). A little drilling and some solder and you are back in business. Mine works great now. I hope any of this helps you out.
