Default What usually goes when the TB breaks?

I have an opportunity to pick up a 2002 1.8T TT with a toasted engine due to TB failure.

Beside the 1 Timing Belt kit:
1 Timing Belt Tensioner Idler
1 Timing Belt Tensioner Damper (w/ Idler)
1 Heavy Duty Water Pump (Metal Impeller)
1 Front Crankshaft Seal
1 Camshaft Seal

What should I expect to replace when I take the head off? From previous posts, it looks like valves and guides. Pistons and connecting rods should be OK.

Default Pistons may have been damaged by the valves

you might as well count on the fact that pistons are going to be junk. You are better off sourcing an entire long block.

I will purchase the donor motor when you do though.

If the belt broke at idle it's one thing, at 70 on the freeway (and the PO didn't push the clutch fast) it's a different story.

Sometimes broken engine parts get into the turbo with negative outcome. Sometimes the head is so messed up it's impossible to do a rebuild.

If I was buying a car like that. I would budget for $2.5-3.5K, and hope you get lucky.

Default Carfax showed 5 owners

4 in the last 4 years. So I decided to pass on this one.
However, I will keep an eye out for another. I'm itching to take one apart and put it back together.

I actually almost bought a 2003 with a broken belt, however owner wanted way too much and thought Audi would "do the right thing".

They didn't of course. He sold it at a big loss several months later.

Keep us posted.
