Get hitched! Starting point for putting a hitch on your TT for bike rack, etc...
A gentleman named Scott posted the other day that he had a hitch and bike rack for his TT. Being the inquisitive type, I e-mailed him asking for details. I will paraphrase him since I don't know whether he wanted to be directly quoted or not.
He used a standard New Beetle hitch (ugh!, I know and had a local hitch specialty shop customize two of the 4 mounts. The hitch was $125 and $50 for the customization.
He says you can see a black bar beneath the back of the TT, and this does affect ground clearance a little with the bike rack and a bike attached. He does not say this, but I imagine it is a 1" receiver hitch. Lots of aftermarket bike rack makers make racks for 1" receiver hitches. He is using Advent's Backpacker bike rack.
He says it keeps the bikes away from the car, although you do have to remove the front wheel and either put it in the second bike mount on the rack or inside the car. I can't imagine a TT with a mountain bike on the back with both wheels still attached. It would stick out a foot on either side!
Personally, the only thing causing me pause about this ingenious installation of Scott's is the ground clearance in the rear. It might catch coming out of my driveway and I could not stand the sound of metal scratching.
Kudos to Scott for doing this and sharing his info.<p>Ivan

picture??
Could we somehow convince this clever soul, or you ObsessTT, to post
a picture of this rig? The use of a beetle mount suggests
possibly other golf-derived mounts to be considered as well?
thanks
