Getting to TT West is half the fun - Part Deux, Flagstaff
Register now for TT West and enjoy the many regional attractions along the way.
Flagstaff has much to offer and is a likely pit stop for those coming from the East or North. Let's start with Walnut Canyon national monument. It is just east of Flagstaff, a short drive off I-40. It is home to about 300 Indian primitive ruins dating around 1100 AD along its expansive valley cliffs. A word of warning, the scenic walking trail drops 185' in a short distance making the walk back difficult for those who are easily winded. Remember you are in rarefied air over 5000'. The monument is open 8-5.
One of my favorites is the loop drive of Sunset Crater and Wupatki national monuments. The loop is off of Rt 89 northeast of town. Sunset crater itself is an extinct cinder cone in the middle of an extensive volcano and lava field. Wupatki offers many interesting Indian ruins. I really like the restored village adjacent to the visitor center. This area is at its best at sunrise and sunset. The visitor center buildings are only open 8-5 but the rest of the park can be viewed anytime during daylight hours.
Another nice drive is the road to the Arizona Snow Bowl atop Mount Humphry which is off of Rt 180 northwest of town. The road is not difficult but the aspen should be turning colors that time of year. Along the way to the turn off stop at the Museum of Northern Arizona. It is a nice small museum that focuses on regional Indian history and recent Indian craft development. It also has a nice gift shop with a good selection of Indian craft items at reasonable prices.
Downtown Flagstaff itself is quaint, with Main Street being old Rt 66. There are several friendly bars to quench your thirst. Shopping in Flagstaff is unremarkable.
If you stay overnight, check the distance from your hotel to the train tracks. Long noisy transcontinental trains run about every 15 minutes 24 hours a day. Personally, I like the two Hampton Inns - inexpensive, new, and quiet.
