Grill rings. Accidental coolness, and new look.
After reading a few posts on painting the Audi rings in the grill, I decided to try it out and see how they'd look on the car. I very carefully removed the rings, and only snapped off 2 of the clips. Then I set out on following my action plan, as follows:
Plan A was to paint them in semi-flat black, and see how they'd look.
Plan B was to paint them to match the car, if they didn't look good black.
Plan C, was to go buy new rings after I destroyed my originals. Complete with the usual spouting of expletives, minor head banging, etc...
As any of you who've painted before know, the paint job is only as good as the prep work. So I tediously sanded every inch of the surface, using 500 grit wet-sandpaper. Then followed that up with a scotchbrite pad. When I was done prepping, the emblem looked just like stainless steel. I didn't forsee a Plan D, but there it was. I just re-installed the emblem, and figured I'd take a few days to look at it. It looked so good I just decided to leave it on the car.
As I wasn't intending to get that look out of the emblem, I would have done things a little different if I were to do it over. If anyone were going to try this, here are a few hints:
1) Use wet sandpaper (the cool black stuff)
2) In retrospect, I'd probably try 1000 grit
and see if it had the same effect. I think
that might make it look even better. In fact,
a scotchbrite pad might do it by itself.
Depending on the level of grit.
3) Don't get too carried away in the corners.
You'll end up sanding thru the plating and
getting down to an almost bronze finish.
4) Apply Deschutes Brewery Jubel Ale. While it's
still in season
My car is Aviator Gray, and I kinda like the utilitarian/military U2 bomber, look of the car. The new look of the rings, fit's my motif. This probably isn't for everyone, but I haven't met anyone yet who didn't like the look of it.
Sorry I don't have any pix. I keep putting off buying a digital camera, I've been too busy buying mods for the car. And there is the fact that I'm kind of the Village Idiot when it comes to electronics. I'm pretty much the Anti-Bibes.
FWIW.. 8)

Seems weird, but they actually look killer on the car. If you try it, >>
be very very careful removing the rings from the grill. That's by far the toughest part.

Hmmm... I wonder if this would work on a VW emblem???
I might try it on the stock front emblem... and if it gets screwed up thats ok cause the grill i'm going to buy uses a passat emblem
